The Last Policemen is set during an apocalypse. A meteor is hurtling toward Earth and life is on countdown. Everyone is trying to fulfill their bucket list before the end but Hank Palace wants only to solve a mystery.
TLDR: Read this if you like mysteries that don’t take themselves too seriously, love a series, and enjoy the occasional dystopian story.
The great thing about this book is that, even though it is set at the very end of the world, it’s a series. How does he do that? I don’t want to spoil it.
But Hank Palace is one of the best detectives working in the mystery genre, though perhaps not for his unmatched skill as a detective. He’s gritty and determined but not super experienced or even that smart. Would he ever have gotten to work a murder case if everyone else wasn’t skipping out to go sailing or skydiving or whatever is on the typical bucket lists? Maybe but with a lot more years of experience.
There’s a subplot involving some radicals and one with his lost sister that are both worth following.
This is a great read and so are the two other books in the trilogy.
Ben Winters is the author of lots of terrific mysteries with quirky and unlikely settings in addition to this series. So, if you like this one, there’s a plethora of other reads from him in your future.
